Friday 11th August: Further to an earlier announcement (see below), we are pleased to inform you that various members of the Indonesian weaving co-operation Koperasi Kerajjnan Tenun Ikat, also known as Jasa Menenun Mandiri (JMM), have just arrived in Leiden. They will be spending the next two weeks at the TRC Leiden. More specifically, these weavers come from Kabupaten Sintang in West Kalimantan/Borneo (Indonesia). During this period they will be giving workshops about ikat binding, dyeing and weaving, basketry making and, as a special for the TRC, beading. For the programme, and registration, please click here.

There are 1200 members of the Koperasi Kerajjnan Tenun Ikat, all of whom are weavers and about 90% of them are women who earn a living using their weaving skills. Of these, about 300 members weave ikats on a daily basis.

A range of their products are on display in the TRC Gallery from the 12th until the 24th August, so you have a chance to buy items directly from the weavers and beaders and to ask questions about the items! The objects range in price from 5 euros to about 300 for some very large, intricate ikats. Please be aware that you have to pay in cash for these items, but there is an ATM (geldautomaat) close to the TRC should you fall in love with something….
