The TRC Leiden is working hard on its Velvet exhibition, which will be held at the TRC Gallery from 4th February 2019 until the 27th June 2019. There are going to be many different types of velvets on display, including items dating from the 15th century to the present day. It will also include garments and furnishings showing how velvet has and is being used. Over one hundred items will be on display.

Help with the preparation of this exhibition is being given by the Leiden-based firm of Lunsingh, a furniture restoration company. They have access to elite velvets currently being produced in France and Italy. Thanks to a very kind donation of 2000 euros by a Friend of the TRC we have already been able to acquire a range of modern velvets for the exhibition, including mohair velvets (such as velours d’Utrecht), cotton, linen, wool and silk forms, different types of cut and uncut velvets, cordribs, as well as a specially woven type of velvet decorated with large sunflowers that have a strong Dutch element to its story (think: Van Gogh and his sunflowers).

In addition to these pieces acquired via Lunsingh, other examples of velvet and velveteen are also coming into the TRC, including this beautiful piece of Chinese silk velveteen from the town of Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, of a type which is called zhângróng and which dates to the 18th-19th centuries. It was made for the Western market. More about this vivid, exciting and at times surprising exhibition will be published in due course!
