Asia Week programme at the Textile Research Centre (TRC), Hogewoerd 164, Leiden, from 14-19 July, organised on the occasion of the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS), Leiden, 16-19 July.

For all TRC activities listed below, please register for participation at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . ICAS participants enjoy free access to lectures and workshops (please show your badge!); others are also very welcome, but there is a fee of €5 for lectures and €25 for the workshops.

Lectures, and the drinks/buffet on Sunday 14th and on Friday 19th are open free of charge to all who are interested to join in, ICAS participants and everybody else, but again, registration in advance is appreciated.

The programme coincides with a special TRC exhibition, Out of Asia: 2000 Years of Textiles. Entrance to the TRC Gallery is free of charge.

The TRC is open on Sunday 14th July from 13.00 – 19.00, and Monday 15th until Friday 19th from 09.30 – 17.30.

Sunday 14th July

14.30 – 16.00 Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, ‘Out of Asia’, opening lecture and guided tour for the new exhibition, Out of Asia: 2000 Years of Textiles

16.00 – 17.30: Drinks and buffet

Monday 15th July

10.00 - 13.00: Workshop by Eric Boudot (Beijing), ‘Analysing ancient textile fragments with affordable equipment.’

14.00 – 15.00: Lecture by Francesco Monuori (Leiden University / TRC), 'The other end of the thread', on European influence on Japanese dress in the late 19th century.

Tuesday 16th July

10.00 - 13.00: Workshop by Eric Boudot (Beijing), ‘Taqueté textiles and the Silk Road.’

14.30 – 15.30: Lecture by Linda McIntosh (Laos), 'Threads of society in Laos.'

Wednesday 17th July

10.00 - 13.00: Workshop by Sandra Sardjono (Berkeley, USA), ‘Textiles of Asia: Identifying weave structures.’

14.30 – 15.30: Lecture by John Ang (Kuala Lumpur), 'Building a context for Malay batiks'.

Thursday 18th July

09.30 – 12.30 and 14.00 – 17.00. Two workshops on indigo dyeing, with lectures, by Mr Zi-luo ZUO and Mrs Mei-shu ZHENG, indigo dyers from Zhuo Ye Cottage.

Friday 19th July

10.00 – 13.00: Workshop by Chris Buckley (Oxford, UK), ‘The seven thousand year conversation: Tracing ancestry through weaving traditions in the Asia-Pacific region.’

14.30 - 15.30: Lecture by Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood (TRC Leiden), ‘Medieval Indian textiles found in Egypt.’

16.30 – 18.00: Drinks and buffet.

The TRC is dependent on project support and individual donations. All of our work is being carried out by volunteers.
