Structural and Decorative Stitching

Enclosed seam made using a running stitch and an overcast stitch. Enclosed seam made using a running stitch and an overcast stitch.

There are different forms of stitching, depending on whether the primary aim is structural or decorative. With respect to structural sewing, if a sleeve, for example, is sewn onto a garment with stitches and then these are removed, then the sleeve will fall off.

However, if decorative stitches are used to embellish the same sleeve and these stitches are removed, leaving the structural stitches, then the structural integrity of the sleeve and garment remains the same – the sleeve continues to be attached the garment.
