Embroidered Morris Screen

Embroidered screen of Morris & Co., 1885-1910. Embroidered screen of Morris & Co., 1885-1910. Copyright Victoria and Albert Museum, London, acc. no. CIRC.848-1956.

In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), there is an embroidered three-panelled screen made by Morris & Co (acc. no. CIRC.848-1956). The panels (from left to right) include the 'Parrot Tulip', 'Large Horned Poppy' and 'Anemone' designs. The designs date from the mid-1880's, but it would appear that the wooden screen frame is later in date.

The designs were created by John Henry Dearle (1860-1932), who eventually became the Art Director of Morris & Co. Such screens were available from Morris & Co. either as kits (complete with ground material and silk threads to be worked at home) or as finished screens. According to a Morris & Co. catalogue from 1910, the price of this type of screen was £17 10s, a considerable sum at that time.
