Knotting

Knotting is an old technique, especially popular among ladies of leisure in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The term is synonymous with stringwork

Queen Mary of England, wife to King William III, was apparently a fervent 'knotter'. Sir Charles Sedley stated: "For here’s a Queen, now thanks to God! Who when she rides in coach abroad, Is always knotting threads."

Threads and shuttle were often kept in a delicate, small knotting bag.
