Watashi-Nui

Watashi-nui is a Japanese style of couching, characterised by the use of a thread that goes across the ground material without appearing on the reverse side of the cloth.

The thread is secured to the ground material by a tome-nui or fixing stitch. It was particularly used in the Muromachi period (1392-1568) for Bugaku (a form of dance) garments.
