Huqqa Mat

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London houses a decorated huqqa mat (a mat on which a water pipe was placed) from India, perhaps from Delhi, and dating to about the third quarter of the nineteenth century.

The mat is 30 cm in diameter. It is made of a velvet ground material with circles of flowers and leaves in applied silver thread and sequins, in between bands of flowers and leaves. The outer fringe is held in place with sequins and silver thread. The mat is backed with crimson silk
