Sir Julius Charles Wernher (1850-1912) was a German born entrepreneur who moved to England in 1871 and became very successful in the gold and diamond trade in South Africa  (so-called Randlord). He also became an art collector, and his collection included many textiles.

The collection was first shown in Wernher's house in Piccadilly, and later displayed to the public at Wernher's country house at Luton Hoo. When Luton Hoo was sold by Wernher's grandson, in the 1990s, much of the collection eventually was loaned to English Heritage. Some 700 objects from the collection are now on display at Ranger's House, Greenwich, London.
