Bolting

Bolting is a nineteenth century form of canvas, so named because it was originally used for bolting or sieving meal and flour.

It is a very fine woollen cloth, chiefly made in England and used for samplers. Bolting is woven in a gauze weave (also known as leno weave), using a very finely spun yarn. It may also be made of silk, linen or hair. There is also another (inferior) yellow form, called sampler canvas.
