Laudian and Laudian Altar Frontal

A laudian is a decorative piece of cloth that hangs over the altar frontal cloth on some Christian altars. The laudian is sometimes called an antependium, but the latter is a general term that means a hanging and is used to describe other church items as well.

The laudian is often made of a square or rectangle of stiff material (card, perspex, wood) and then the decorative cloth is stretched over it. The laudian is normally decorated with appliqué or embroidery using various Christian symbols.

Laudian altar frontal or full laudian frontal are terms that are sometimes used to describe an altar frontal with a large motif in the centre where the separate laudian is normally placed.
