A vandyke (or vandyke edge) is a seventeenth century term referring to an edge of a decorative textile, as for instance a trimming, that has a deeply indented, ornamental triangular form.
This type of border is named after the Flemish painter Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641), who often painted men and women wearing collars with this form of edging made with needlework, embroidered lace or bobbin lace.
