The TRC recently accepted two large donations of traditional clothing and other forms of textiles, which originate from central Europe (especially from various groups living in Albania, Hungary and Romania), as well as many other places around the globe, including a beautiful set of American quilts.

They were collected by experts in Paris and in Arizona, and were recently transported to the TRC. Are you puzzled how the the TRC is processing, cataloguing, photographing, and storing these items? Would you like to see some examples? Please join us at the TRC along the Hogewoerd for an informal meeting on Sunday afternoon, 24 April, from 13.00.

The Sunday open afternoon will include brief introductions to the donations themselves, and to the various stages in the processing of the more than 1500 textiles. Some of the volunteers doing the actual work, including Leiden Universsity MA students, will tell about their activities. They will discuss the many stages, in both theory and practice, and discuss the solutions to the various challenges encountered.

They will also talk about the concept of Citizen Culture, whereby large groups of volunteers work together in understanding and processing textiles from far-away, and especially in exploring the stories behind the objects! There will also be the chance to discuss what we are going to do with the items, with respect to publications, actual and online exhibitions, and detailed studies of individual items.

Of course, there will be ample opportunity to see many of the textiles, and talk about them with TRC staff.

Date: Sunday, 24 April 2022. Time: 13.00 - 16.30 pm. The programme starts at 13.30, but visitors are welcome throughout the afternoon. Venue: TRC Leiden, Hogewoerd 164, 2351 HW Leiden.
