Band weaving is a technique for weaving sturdy, narrow and colourful bands. The oldest finds date from the Bronze Age (as far as we know today). In the centuries that followed, from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, the most beautiful patterns emerged, one more complicated than the other.Example of a band woven girth from Sudan, TRC.2016.0194.Example of a band woven girth from Sudan, TRC.2016.0194.

During this workshop we are introduced to the technique of band weaving. Participants learn to read patterns and the basics of band weaving.

This Wednesday morning workshop is given by Dorothee Olthof, an expert in the field of archaeological textiles and in the reconstruction of medieval and later clothing.
