Embroidered Fragments from Smela, Kiev (Ukraine)

There is a passing reference to a small group of embroidered fragments found in a man’s grave in Smela, near Kiev. The excavations were published by Count Alexey Alexandrovich Bobrinskoi (1852-1927) in 1887.

Bobrinskoi noted that the remains of a woollen garment embroidered with a complicated pattern of galloons in blue, red and yellow were recorded in the grave. Unfortunately no further details or an illustration were given.
