English Sampler with Florentine Work, AD 1749

English sampler from 1749 with Florentine work. English sampler from 1749 with Florentine work. Copyright Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK, acc. no. T.205-1929

An English sampler made in AD 1749 by an unknown embroiderer includes examples of Florentine work, notably three variations on the flame pattern. These are worked in black, green, red and white woollen thread on a linen ground.

The sampler was given to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Mrs. Lewis F. Day, a notable English embroiderer and collector in the early twentieth century (and co-author of Art in Needlework, London 1900; see Art Needlework).
