Early Eighteenth Century Woman's Pocket

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London houses an embroidered woman's pocket made in England in the early eighteenth century. It measures 34 x 21 cm. It is made of linen and embroidered with woollen thread.

Such pockets were attached to a tape and tied around the waist (as is still the case in some types of Dutch regional dress). The decoration mirrors British crewel work of the seventeenth century (better known as Jacobean work), but curatorial information points out that the floral motifs also show Indian influences.
