Virágozás

Suba cloak with virágozás embroidery, from Hungary. Suba cloak with virágozás embroidery, from Hungary.

Virágozás means 'flowering', and refers to a Hungarian tradition of decorating fleeces with satin stitch in silk. The specific motifs were dependent on regional and family traditions. The motifs were prepared with stencils or templates. The stitches were worked carefully, without passing through the fleece.

The main garment worked with this technique is the suba, a sleeveless, Hungarian cloak that is made of a large number (fourteen) sheepskins. Source: SWIFT, Gay (1984 ). The Batsford Encyclopaedia of Embroidery Techniques, London: Batsford, p. 217.
