Marseille quilts were popular in Britain from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. According to Averil Colby (1972:149), the fabric could be purchased by the yard for making into bedcovers at home.
This form of quilt should not be confused with Provincial Quilt or Marseille White Corded Quilting.
