Detached overcast stitch

A detached overcast stitch is a raised stitch that is created using a foundation line of stem stitches, which is then hidden with small overcast stitches.

The thread of the overcast stitch goes between the stem stitch and the ground material. It whips around and around the foundation. This type of stitch is often used where two lines, such as in plant stalks and stems, cross over each other. The stitch is also used in some varieties of Italian cut work.
