Genoese Lace

Genoese lace is a form of guipure, bobbin lace that in the early nineteenth century was introduced in Malta and, with the addition of the Maltese cross in the design, developed into Maltese lace.

Genoese lace is characterised by its so-called 'wheat ears', which are small leaf-shaped strands included in the generally geometric design.

Genoese lace was popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but went out of fashion, although it continued to be produced well into the nineteenth century.
