The exhibition was set up to celebrate four hundred years of hand embroidered garments in Dutch fashion. It included some 150 garments and accessories, many of which fitted onto mannequins. The exhibition stresses the continued popularity of embroidery, until today, with Gucci denim jackets and a dress worn by Queen Maxima, which is elaborately decorated with beadwork.
Whitework was well represented, with garments worn at christenings and weddings. There was also a catsuit designed by the modern Dutch designer, Jan Taminiau, which is fully covered with pailettes, but also shoes from the early seventeenth century decorated with gold thread embroidery.
An accompanying book in paperback format was written by Eveline Holsappel and Karin Gaillard, Haute bordure. Borduren in de mode. 2021. ISBN 9789-462623125.
