In the year 2000, the London-based hand embroidery company of Hand & Lock established a prize for embroidery. The prize was originally conceived by the chairman of the company, Alastair Macleod, as a way of encouraging the use of embroidery in the fashion and textile world and to allow young designers from around the world to showcase their finest creations.

The criteria include concept, execution, construction, embroidery skill and overall presentation. The twelve finalists are appointed a mentor, who, in the past, have included professional designers such as Carol Alayne, Hasan Hejazi, Zandra Rhodes and Diana Springall. These mentors help with advice and guidance for designers who are unused to working within the industry. The first prize includes the sum of c. $26,000 and help in developing the winner's designs and networks.
