Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Glove

Detail of the Coronation Glove of Elizabeth II of Britain, 1953. Detail of the Coronation Glove of Elizabeth II of Britain, 1953. RCIN 25749; Royal Collection Trust / @ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 2014.

The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Glove is made of leather with goldwork embroidery and was presented to Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation in 1953. It was made by the firm of Dents, glove-makers. The glove for the right hand of the monarch is made of white kid leather with the grain on the outside and lined with crimson silk.

The glove was embroidered with raised goldwork, using spangles, purl and plate metal thread. The pattern includes British emblems, notably the Tudor rose, shamrock, thistle, and oak leaf acorns. The upper hand has a crown and E II R in raised gold purl. A duplicate glove from this coronation is in the Harborow collection of the Worshipful Company of Glovers, London (acc. no. 25749). Coronation gloves are sometimes referred to as gauntlets, because of their tapering shape.
