Dickel lace is a form of tape lace designed in the early twentieth century by the German lace maker, Franziska Dichtl. It would  appear that this type is based on eighteenth century forms of tape lace, but re-styled for contemporary tastes.

At the beginning of the twentieth century there were four widths of ‘Dickel braid’ available for making into tape lace. These braids/tapes came in about 150 designs, all with close convolutions so that the only extra element of decorative needlework was the making of buttonholed bars to hold the lengths of tape together.

Also written: dichtl lace; dicktl lace.
