Marine Comfort Quilts

Marine Comfort Quilts is a grassroots project in the USA that was originally organized to make and present a quilt to the next-of-kin of every US Marine Corps soldier who died in the war in Iraq. The project began in March 2003 following an attack against a US Marine unit in An Nasiriya, Iraq, which left eighteen marines dead.

The Home of the Brave Quilt project is a USA grassroots organisation set up to make and present a quilt to the immediate family of every USA military member who has died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The project was founded by Donald Beld of the Citrus Belt Quilters (southern California, USA) and was started in July 2004.

Tifaifai is a quilt style from French Polynesia, involving appliqué and patchwork. Tifaifai means ‘to mend, sew.’ Cotton fabrics and patchwork were introduced in the early nineteenth century by Christian missionaries.

Calico Museum of Textiles, Ahmedabad

The Calico Museum of Textiles, Ahmedabad (Gujarat, India), houses a major collection of both hand and industrially produced textiles from India, which range in date from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries. The Museum itself dates to 1949 and was set up by the industrialists, Gautam Sarabhai and his sister, Gira Sarabhai. Their family owns a large calico printing works, called Calico (also known as the House of Calico).

Old Samplers and Tapestry Embroideries (1900)

In March 1900, the exhibition 'Old Samplers and Tapestry Embroideries' was held at the Fine Art Society, London. The exhibition was curated by Marcus Bourne Huish, together with a lady called Mrs. Head (author of The Lace and Embroidery Collector) who gave details about techniques and stitches. The exhibition included samplers made by the Brontë sisters and by the mother and grandmother of John Ruskin.
